Caricature of Gal Gadot

Caricatures, they are fun, right? They are certainly a challenge. It took me a while to get just to this level. It is a lot of hard work, but this is something I like doing in the long run. This caricature is of Israeli actress and model Gal Gadot. She’s kind of pretty. That’s great. But when you do a caricature you’re looking for something that stands out, something that you easily can exaggerate. She didn’t have any of that. I could have distorted her pretty face. That didn’t feel right for her. So I went for the big eyes and the lips.

When you look at my early work, my first caricatures, it feels embarrassing. There is a fantastic site that lets you compete in a contest. The site is called Wittygraphy and it’s full of fantastic artists. Go there and check it out. Also you can find my work there as well. My early stuff is there and for all to see. I guess this is part of the learning process. You got to jump into the water in order to learn to swim.

Caricatures are a funny thing. There is this type of caricature and then you have the life caricature. I have now attended a couple of events of life caricaturing. I can tell you what. This is one tough gig. You sit down and you get swamped by people who want to have their faces drawn. Lucky for me it was a charity event and I was there to learn the trade. I was exhausted after 4 to 6 yours of drawing. But I loved it. At the end I didn’t see the faces anymore. I had to stop. But I have seen many happy faces and also some puzzled expressions. “Is that me?” Well, yes. We all see different things in faces. That’s why every caricature is different.

Will I attend a life caricature event again? Sure I will. I learnt a lot and I will get better at it. It’s just a matter of practicing and keep attending those functions. If I do well I can attend corporate events as well. That is the goal. But I like to learn a bit more. I want to get faster and more confident.
