Lest We Forget

Every year on November 11, at 11, we remember when the guns have fallen silent. We remember the soldiers who have fallen for us. We remember the survivors who have fought for all.

I have to be honest here and I don’t want to upset anyone, especially my friends who have served. I feel a bit uneasy in those moments. I have the most respect for all servicemen and servicewomen. However, I still struggle.

There is a reason why I distance myself from these services. The same applies for the dawn service. I had to serve. Where I grew up it’s compulsory to join the armed service. I never liked it. I probably never will. It’s personal.

I was lucky not to have served in an active conflict. Also, what we did in the army was construction of paths and bridges. I felt more useful doing that than going on long marches and polish my rifle.

It still doesn’t mean I disrespect those who fought for us. If I had to I would have. But right now I fight with my pen. The weapon of my choice. The cartoon is a formidable platform to raise discussions and settle arguments.

You can find this cartoon in the local newspapers around the Yarra Valley. Feel free to go to their site and enjoy the cartoons and journalism.

With that I leave the cartoon there and let you discuss it.
