Week 5: 1920’s challenge

1920, the year of the silent movies, fancy dances and jazz. And of course the goat kids. They managed to get into the picture with Charlie Chaplin. What else do you know about the 20’s? I wasn’t there when it happened. Not even my dad. All I can go by is old movies and the inter web. You know what I mean. It must have been a pretty wild time. If the movies are anything to go by. The time was different in 1920.

I have chosen this scene from 1920 as It seemed to be the best representation for me. I remember the movie well. I watched it a few times as a kid. There are a number of photos with Charlie Chaplin in this setting. One is with a child and one with a dog. I just added a kid. Actually three. So my three little goat kids are getting around a bit these days. They don’t seem to mind.

I tired to keep the tones of this illustration to a warm but monotone as possible. I didn’t want to alter the colours on the computer this time. I thought it would give it a nice touch with a manual feel to it. Sometimes the digital drawings can look a bit sterile. I try my best not to do that. I think some drawings need to be done by hand. I used Photoshop a bit at the end to bring out the whites better. Quite often the whites look grey after scanning. I import the picture into photoshop and level the colours a little bit without altering the rest of the picture too much. I sometimes have to darken it a bit to get the contrast a bit better.

Im glad you could make it to this page again and with any luck I see you soon.

Danny
