Rain brings down the Rainmaster, Superbike race in Lausitzring, Germany

Rain started and that is usually a good sign for our local Rainmaster, Anthony West. This young man has raced in just about anything there is to race on two wheels and he quite often excels in tricky situations, like when it is raining. That’s why I call him the rain master.

But rain isn’t necessary liked by many riders. Even Ant West isn’t a big fan of it. But he is good at riding motorbikes. And also, because he hasn’t got a full time gig at the top level he can take risks. Other participants in the category have to be a bit more careful. They might race for a championship and don’t want to get tangled up in a wildcard entry one off racer. So West can race to his full potential without the risk of loosing points and jeopardise a championship.

In the World Super Bikes (WSBK), there are two races per race weekend. There is one on Saturday and one on Sunday. There was no rain on Saturday and West finished in 11th position. Then on Sunday, just as they were about to start racing, the rain started. The race didn’t, it got delayed. Once the conditions stabilised the race got underway. Rain was still in the air. Anthony West got a great start and was quickly up the pointy end. Others started to fall and West ended up in 4th place. He had a podium in sight.

But then the the rain brought the rain master down. This is so disappointing. I’m pretty sure he was too. But that’s how racing goes. To finish first you must first finish. And Ant didn’t. He is still 17th in the championship, which is remarkable when you think that he isn’t even racing there full time. I really wish him all the best for the future and a permanent, well paid gig with a top team so he can go for the win and the championship.
