Hayden to move from MotoGP to SBK

Nicky Hayden is moving from MotoGP to World Super Bikes. The 2006 MotoGP World Champion and 2002 AMA Superbike Champion was racing for a few years now in the open class category in MotoGP. What is the open class? If you follow the sport, you probably know already. But for those who don’t follow the MotoGP, here is a brief explanation. For the last couple of years we had two classes racing in the top motorcycle category. There are the Factory bikes and the road bike derived bikes. A true factory bike is a proper prototype. The open class bikes use a modified street legal engine. The frame and other bits are heavily modified. They go like the clappers, but not as fast as the factory machines.

They have something what they call a control ECU. An ECU controls all the electrics on these bikes. Now Nicky Hayden has had a run on these for a few years now. Not long ago he tried out a Super Bike Honda and found that there is more electronics on those bikes than there is on an open class MotoGP bike. He finds this amusing. Hayden will find himself right at home with these bikes. To me it sounds like Hayden made the right choice to move to the Super Bikes. He has the drive to be up front with the other regulars.

The new season is soon kicking off. The first round will be at Phillip Island in February. I know its still 3 months to go, but you also know how quick time flies. What are you’re predictions for the World Super Bikes? Do you follow the races? If you do, which ones do you prefer?

Sorry, I’m just curious. I personally like the Supers a bit better. It’s just a pity we don’t get them here in Australia on free to air TV anymore.
